On May 05 2020– Lebanon’s Energy and Water Minister Raymond Ghajar said Tuesday that Lebanon will start oil and gas exploration in Block 9 of its territorial waters by the end of this year.Ghajar’s remarks came following comments by some officials, including the head of Al Marada Movement, Sleiman Franjieh, who said that Lebanon is a non-oil country, contrary to the information provided by the presidency and the Energy and Water Ministry.
The location of Lebanon within the Mediterranean phosphatic belt, where uranium deposits often exist, adds another possibility for the natural occurrence of uranium ores. A ground radiometric survey, using a portable scintillometer has been carried out on selective sites in Lebanon, with a special emphasis on Neocomian-Barremian (sandstone and clay), Albian (shale) and Senonian (Marl)rock formations. June 4 2020 Wissam Chbat, board member at the Lebanese Petroleum Administration (LPA) and head of LPA’s Geology and Geophysics Unit, said that Total, French oil company, is expected to specify the location of the well to be drilled by its subcontractors in Block 9 of Lebanon’s waters within six weeks. Total has already drilled a well in Block 4 earlier this year but it did not find sandstone reservoirs such as those found in Palestine and Cyprus.

In response to plans by Israel to begin exploration for oil and natural gas in an area near disputed waters, Lebanon will uphold its rights and sovereignty over all its lands, waters, airspace and oil, and confirmed that any activity in the Block 9 area is constantly monitored by the Lebanese Army and UNIFIL.
.In June, Israel’s Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz approved the beginning of the competitive process for granting a natural gas and oil exploration license for Block 72. Preliminary investigations in the area have found potential gas fields similar geologically to other fields in the area, such as the Tamar field.
