Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) is a foundation that takes donations from public, private, philanthropic, and civil society organisations, to finance independent research projects to develop vaccines against emerging infectious diseases (EID).
It was conceived in 2015 and formally launched in 2017 at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.
CEPI is headquartered in Oslo, Norway.CEPI is incorporated under Norwegian law.
Richard J. Hatchett is the present Chief Executive of CEPI, while Jane Halton is presently holding the Chair.
It was co-founded and co-funded with US$460 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, The Wellcome Trust, and a consortium of nations, being Norway, Japan, Germany; to which the European Union 2019) and Britain (2020) subsequently joined.
Area Of Working
CEPI is focused on the World Health Organization’s (WHO) “blueprint priority diseases”, which include: the Middle East respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus (MERS-CoV), the Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the Nipah virus, the Lassa fever virus, and the Rift Valley fever virus, as well as the Chikungunya virus and the hypothetical, unknown pathogen “Disease X”.
India and CEPI
The Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India is supporting the implementation of the Ind-CEPI Mission, “Epidemic preparedness through rapid vaccine development: Support of Indian vaccine development aligned with the global initiative of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI)”, through a dedicated Program Management Unit (PMU) at Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC).

The Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India is implementing the Ind-CEPI mission titled ̳India Centric Epidemic Preparedness through Rapid Vaccine Development: Supporting Indian Vaccine Development Aligned with the Global Initiative of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI)‘.
The clinical sample testing laboratories selected for this collaborative vaccine network are:

Ind-CEPI Mission The Ind-CEPI Mission was approved on 27th March 2019 with a total cost INR312.92 crore.
Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI) is a society registered under the Societies Registration Act It is also an autonomous institute of the Department of Biotechnology. It was set up in 2009 at Gurgaon and is now located in NCR Biotech Science Cluster, Faridabad along with the Regional Center for Biotechnology, Advanced Technology Platforms Center, Small Animal Facility, and Bio-incubator. Envisioned by former secretary of DBT, M. K. Bhan, the centre was created to enable faster transition of lab research to market. Pramod Garg is the executive director of THSTI.
THSTI has six intramural centers namely Vaccine & Infectious Disease Research Centre (VIDRC), Pediatric Biology Centre (PBC), Centre for Bio-design & Diagnostics (CBD), Centre for Human Microbial Ecology (CHME), Policy Centre for Biomedical Research (PCBR), and Drug Discovery Research Centre (DDRC).
The HIV Vaccine Translational Research (HVTR) Laboratory was established in 2012 as a joint initiative between THSTI— an autonomous body of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India — and IAVI(International AIDS Vaccine Initiative)..
The laboratory works in collaboration with the US-based Scripps Research Institute, New York-based Weill Cornell Medical College, Amsterdam-based Academic Medical Center, and Johannesburg-based National Institute of Communicable Diseases.
In collaboration with Department of Biotechnology DBT , Bharat Biotech International Limited, PATH and CHRD-SAS, VIDRC was also engaged in the phase III randomized, double-blind placebo controlled trial to evaluate the non-interference in the immune response of three doses of ORV 116E (Rotavac) to antigens contained in childhood vaccines and to assess the clinical lot consistency of three production lots.
THSTI also has one partnership center named Population Science Partnership Centre (PSPC) with the Centre for Health Research and Development, Society for Applied Studies (CHRD-SAS) which in turn was founded by the late Dr. Dilip Mahalanabis who worked for decades at Johns Hopkins and WHO and one extramural center named Clinical Development Services Agency (CDSA)to facilitate development of affordable healthcare products for public health diseases.
